A New Library Service -- Smart Gateway to E-Resources

The smart gateway service is now available for the Tsinghua students and faculty to improve the availability of online academic resources. Up to 190 educational resource platforms are accessible through the smart gateway, covering E-resource platforms such as CNKI, Wanfang Data, China Science and Technology Journal Database, Nature, Science Online, Springer Link, Elsevier Science Direct, IEEE/IETElectronic Library, Web of Science, and other platforms.

Under normal circumstances, library users’ access to specific E-resource is restricted within the IP address ranges, usually the on-campus IP addresses set by service providers. Thus, it would be inconvenient for off-campus library users to make full use of the E-resource needed. The Tsinghua library’s smart gateway service is now available to solve such difficulties.

Moreover, the gateway service pursues creating quick, intelligent, and ubiquitous access to all E-resources. Before, you would have to find the appropriate way for off-campus access; from now on, you are free from bothering to find the access by yourself with the smart gateway available. As the name indicates, the smart gateway will “smartly” and effectively find its way to the E-resource as wished. While on the on-campus network, it will directly lead you to the resource aimed; On the other hand, while on the off-campus network, the gateway will ask you to verify your Tsinghua ID and then provide you with remote access to what you need. The gateway system remains logged in within a short time once your ID is verified.

For example, through the database, namely “Nature”. You could browse through the Database Navigation System and find that the smart gateway is already embedded there. By clicking on the Access button, the smart gateway will process the procedures mentioned in the passage above. Other existing off-campus accesses will remain available during the browse, and you could view all of them on the description page for the database.

Now try out the smart gateway service for quick, innovative, and ubiquitous access to all E-resources, both on-campus and off-campus!
